South Jersey Players to present RUMPELSTILTSKIN – a musical adaptation at studio;space in Somers Point – 112 Woodland Avenue (near Crab Trap) August 19th & August 20th.
Twenty-four years ago, Marlene May and Ellen Mandel collaborated on an adaptation with music, of the popular fairy tale, RUMPELSTILTSKIN. Marlene wrote the script adaptation and lyrics in verse, with the goal of introducing young audiences to heightened language. Ellen composed the enchanting music. Together, they first produced the work in NYC, at the Jean Cocteau Repertory Company, under the mentorship of then Artistic Director, David Fuller. The production was featured in the Cocteau lobby – a casual space – perfect for children’s theater. Marlene directed the work and Ellen was the musical director and accompanist. The children and their parents loved it!
Both Marlene May, president of South Jersey Players, Inc. and Ellen Mandel, a prolificcomposer living in NYC, decided to remount the work in Somers Point this season. Ellen hasupdated the piano score and Marlene who will direct the show, has tweaked the script for the current cast. Twins, Winnie Mei and Quinnie Mei will be the piano accompanists. Jim Erickson is the Technical Director – assisted by Chartertech High School student, Jess Nicole Luciano.Kim Halverson will assistant stage manage, Anna Cueno will light the show, and Heidi Mae, will be the house manager. Patti Meunier will help with refreshments.
The Miller/Witch will be played by Ahmad Marshall; Penelope, by Yamirah Williams, The King, by Burke Erickson and Rumpelstiltskin, by Joe Chialastri.
Performance dates: Saturday, August 19th at 3 pm & 5 pm and Sunday, August 20th at 3 pm.
Audience age range: 3–12 years old. Adults who wish to tap into their inner child will also enjoy this unique version.
